Migration of backups without access for original server

Post by vbjr »

Hello everyone,

I am bit new to this so I hope my question makes sense.

If I have a vps where jetbackup was being used and it was sending the backups to an offsite server via ftp.

And then we have to migrate the vps to another provider and setup jetbackup again... how can I configure jetbackup to read the old backups that were originally setup on the original vps?

--Note: without having access to the original VPS anymore, e.g. all I would have is the backup target details and nothing else.

Second question:
---------------------

If the new backup target is setup and lets assume question 1 is possible to link up to the old backups, will jetbackup show all backups (old a new ones?)
- Will it start to decomission the old ones like before? Or will it completely wipe them all out?

Hope you are able to help me answer the above.

Thanks a lot.

Hi vbjr,

For the most convenient/recommended way to migrate your JetBackup configuration (database backup), please refer to our Disaster Recover documentation here: https://docs.jetbackup.com/manual/whm/D ... overy.html

If you already have migrated your accounts and only need to migrate your JetBackup configuration/database, you may skip the rest of the disaster recovery wizard (by hitting next) once you have the JB config imported.

Please do note that a couple of requirements are needed from your original installation of JetBackup in order to properly execute Disaster Recovery:
  1. Make sure that you have Export JB Config Enabled on the FTP destination on your original installation. The JB Config contains all your destination and backup job configuration as well as other JetBackup settings.

    (https://docs.jetbackup.com/manual/whm/D ... -jb-config)

To verify that your JB Config is exported, please browse your FTP destination and verify that the following folder exists on your destination: jetbackup_3_4
browsing the following folder should contain a disasterRecovery.tar archive file.
  2. Have a copy of your Master Private Key from your original server. your JB config backup is encrypted and requires this key to successfully import it to your new server.
    (https://docs.jetbackup.com/manual/whm/T ... teKey.html)
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

If you still have access to your original server and already have migrated your accounts to your new server, you may consider importing your JB config manually via our command-line tool here: https://docs.jetbackup.com/manual/whm/C ... tings.html

Once you have your JB config imported manually, please run the reindex command to associate back your existing backups from your destinations. https://docs.jetbackup.com/manual/whm/C ... index.html

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
If the new backup target is setup and lets assume question 1 is possible to link up to the old backups, will jetbackup show all backups (old a new ones?)
- Will it start to decomission the old ones like before? Or will it completely wipe them all out?
Importing your JetBackup configuration via either option specified above (wizard or manual) will reindex your existing backups and automatically resumes your backup job rotation and does not wipe out backups for any active accounts. With that said, I also suggest disabling the Delete orphan backups older than setting under your General Settings (https://docs.jetbackup.com/manual/whm/S ... older-than) until you can verify that your JetBackup configuration and backups have been successfully migrated/imported.

If you need further clarification or assistance regarding any information provided, please don't hesitate to reach out to our support team at support@jetapps.com
